Gold reflections on the Harbour
I spend a fair bit of time kayaking the waters of fair Sydney, which means mostly I’m paddling on my own. But occassionally I convince a mate to come along, and Burnsie (pictured above) is one of my regular paddling mates.
Now Burnsie spent a good decade in the Navy and is pretty comfortable on the water, although he loves a leisurely paddle complete with a coffee from the Coffee Boat rather than an energetic fitness paddle. That’s fine with me though, its great fun shooting the breeze and discussing life (and @TSS2010′s kayaking with whale videos!) on the beautiful waters of Sydney.
Gotta love time on the water with friends. Cheers Burnsie!

Hard to believe this is in the middle of Sydney! Burnsie relaxing.

Burnsie on purple Boréal Narwhal - surely he's not injured again!?
You wouldn’t believe it. Burnsie, aka the Navy Cook, who you may have seen suffered a crippling flesh injury on a previous paddle, again today suffered another horrendous kayaking injury. One thing to say Burnsie…. Harden Up! (or get some gloves at least!)

Another horrific flesh wound for Burnsie

Paddling the glassy waters of Middle Harbour
It was only a matter of time before someone got hurt. I expected it would be your’s truly, since a big man on a little kayak is bound to lead to disaster. But it wasn’t the Fat Paddler who got hurt, it was none other than paddle-mate Burnsie.

Burnsie - happier times (ie an hour before his injury occurred)
Now I do feel a little responsible. I had asked him earlier if he’d like to do the Hawkesbury Classic with me, a question which obviously shook him and lead to his loss of concentration, and inevitably, to his injury. Because as we passed the half-way mark on our paddle, Burnise admitted to me that he was hurt, and hurt badly.
So we hit the paddles hard and rushed back to the Spit to seek advice and medical aid. On our return, Burnsie showed me the true extend of the injury (for the squeamish, stop reading now). And what an injury, I was amazed he’d been able to continue at all.

The crippling flesh-wound
I know I know, horrific.
So Burnsie, if you are out there reading this, please know that the Fat Paddler and his readers are sending through get well wishes, and hope the flesh-wound heals soon.
Out.

The floating barista on Sydney Harbour - we love him!
I can’t start to tell you how excited I was the first time I ran into the coffee boat up in Bantry Bay. You’ve put 3-4kms paddling behind you and a nice hot strong coffee would be perfect – and look, there’s the coffee boat!
Now other paddlers have told me there’s a fresh fruit juice boat too (are they hinting that I might be, well, fat??), but the real question is…. where’s the Bacon & Eggs boat?!?

Ahhh, black gold! Could there be a better spot for coffee?

Bear, Rich and Burnsie (yellow kayak) on glassy Sydney Harbour
Well it didn’t take long until one of the core three bailed. Two weeks in fact, before Milo pulled the pin. Ok, so he has to move to Brisbane for work, but still! Anyways, best of luck mate, maybe when you come back.
We also gained a paddler in Burnsie, ex-Navy cook extraordinaire, and very much at home in the water. Life out of the navy has proved to be somewhat, well, fattening, so Burnise is well on his way to becoming a FatPaddler.
Welcome, brother!
